I dont go out to the bars in north county much, not because I have anything against em its just that why would I drive 30 min to a bar when there is one 4 blocks away from my house? Buttttt I will make the trek up there to hang out with people who are awesome and awesome was this past Saturday. Pool party at my good friend jessica’s 5 star resort/house and then 3rd corner for dinner, beachside and the saloon. good times. Sorry for the shitty iphone pics..but when there is a lot of alcohol and water splashing involved you just gotta keep the camera at home.

THE ROAD TO RENO

The second week I was in the YAY area, I continued on my wakeboarding adventures and met up with my friend Melissa Marquardt. Melissa was headed to Reno for the last stop of the pro wakeboard tour. Her, Justin Fisher and Kyle Rowe had towed “Goldy,” their new jetski up from Canyon Lake and were on a mission to wakeboard, wakeskate, and skate the shiieett out of norcal. Sounded like too much fun to pass up. We started our adventures in San Jose where we hit up the San Jose skatepark at Lake Cunningham. Of course the day we decided to go was pretty much the hottest day of the month, so they had to shut down the skatepark due to the intense heat. Talk about a buzzkill, but we did see this one little kid puke all over himself so I guess it was a good thing. Since it was blazin hot out, we decided to hit up Raging Waters which was conveniently located right next to the skate park. It’s been awhile since I’ve been to a waterpark but I swear they used to be way better? Something about a bunch of people wading, swimming and doing who knows what in a giant cesspool of under chlorinated water just isn’t that appealing anymore…maybe it’s just me. Anyway, we played with the GoPro cams while we were there, here are some shots:

Continuing the trek to Reno, we camped at Folsom Lake where we took Goldy out for a spin. The water was a little choppy but Melissa and Kyle shredded on the wakeskate regardless. Then Melissa almost shredded the jetski when we ran over some giant invisible rocks. Good thing Goldy is a champ. Then we saw two really old people getting it on near the shore and that was hilarious and sort of gross at the same time.

After Folsom we finally made it to Reno where we stayed in the lovely Nugget Hotel & Casino/5 Star luxury resort. Ahhhh Reno. Reno is like a shitty version of Vegas. What more could you want than a shitty version of Vegas? Over the course of the weekend, I lost $55 bucks at blackjack, drank double jaeger shots with my buddy Brandon who is the dragon wake TM and a raging alcoholic (just kidding), took Ashley’s last piece of gum which apparently she is holding against me for life, saw Rusty Malinowski land the first 1080 in a contest, wakesurfed on a ridiculously awesome private lake c/o this rad dude named Brett, and ate sushi in Reno which was surprisingly really good. I’d post all the pictures from these activities but oh wait, I was too busy having fun to take them. But I will leave you with some pics from the contest:

RIDIN DIRTY AT THE DELTA

I spent the past couple weeks up in northern california, getting some wake action in – hanging out with my friend Shelby Kantar at the Delta Wakeboard Camp and then later meeting up with Melissa Marquardt and jumping on a road trip to Reno, NV where the last stop of the pro wakeboard tour took place. The delta was pretty amazing, miles and miles of water and no one around. The Delta Wakeboard Camp is where Shelby rides, hangs out and works in the summertime. The DWC crew is based out of a houseboat at Tower Park in Stockton and is composed of Shelby, Derek Conway, Kyle Beechum and Daniel Doud. They live on the houseboat, teach wakeboard lessons and ride all summer long. Hella jealous!

X GAMES

XXXXXXX GAMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEESSSSSSS. Oh X Games. For someone who is not a fan of LA I spend a lot of time up there, damn. Anyway, I cruised up to the Home Depot Center in Carson last Thursday to watch the girls vert and street skate contests. One word to describe the girls skating: progression. In both contests the girls stepped it up. In vert Karen, Lynz and Gaby all landed kickflip indys. I have to say I was blown away by the girls street contest. I’ve been going to the X Games and watching the girls skate for the past 3 years but this year I was really really impressed. Although the new format (each rider gets 10 tries, in order, at each obstacle) made for a slower paced session, I will say that it was somewhat more viewer friendly. The girls were throwing down so hard in street, especially because everything in the course was huge. I just wish I could skate half as good as these chicks. I have to say my favorite to watch was Alexis Sablone. I was wondering where she came from and I found out that she apparently just finished her degree in architecture at Columbia University…um yeah no biggie. She landed a kickflip over the 12 stair first try…DAMN. I think its safe to say that she may be the only graduate from the architecture program at Columbia that that will ever kickflip a 12 stair. Props to all the girls who skated and fuck ESPN for not filming it. Here are some photo highlights c/o Dan Coronado and William Prokop:

After spending the day watching some shredding, it was time to experience the other side of X Games…the party scene. Normally industry parties are pretty fun because there are a lot of people that you know or you meet people that are awesome. However, when the party takes place in downtown LA at a scened out hotel such as The Standard, its a little different. Well I was lucky enough to experience this wonderful atmosphere because my good friend Nereida Aguayo is a designer at DC Shoes and had a room for the night. We met up with our other friend Val from Spy and checked out all the haps. Val had some tickets to the X Games 3D movie premier so we went to that for a good 20 minutes. It was cool for about 10 minutes but there is only so much mainstream/ESPN-ish overload I can take in an action sports film. The Nokia live theater was HUGE, I’ve seriously never seen so many people in one room. Anyway, we got out of there halfway through the film because frankly I was scared to experience that many people trying to exit a theater.

We headed back to the Standard where we went up to the rooftop party that DC threw. Of course the entertainment started in the elevator where we had the pleasure of riding up with 5 drunk ass girls who were wearing dresses too skanky and heels too high for their own good. Ahh LA. It was a minute long elevator ride with the typical drunk picture taking marathon while the chicks were spilling their drinks and falling all over themselves. Awesome. Unfortunately I started off the night far too sober for such a scene. I will say that the view from the rooftop bar was pretty cool. As the night went on, the party got less annoying and more fun. Or maybe it was the alcohol. Yeah it must have been the alcohol. Highlights include seeing Audrina from the Hills…haha. I mean where else would you have the Dingo and Audrina at the same party? I guess if it really was a good party, it would have been LC and Danny, not just their sidekicks. Anyway, I hung out with the DC women’s design crew: Nereida, Tammy and Karen, and they are awesome. The night ended in the only way it should end: a hotel room afterparty that included calling room service for drunchies (drunk munchies). Quote of the night is Karen saying to DC Snow TM Zach “I’m old enough to be your mom. I could shotgun this beer while changing your diaper.” Fuckin awesome.

SERIOUSLY CALIFORNIA PART 1

seriously_ca_intro

Road trips are awesome. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on one so when my homie Annie Sullivan invited me to go on a Sector 9 road trip up the California coast, I was pumped. Summer road trip? Hell yeah…! The plan was to start from San Diego and hit up surf and skate spots up the state, end destination Santa Cruz. Everyone knows that the most important part of a road trip is your crew. The worst thing in the world is to be stuck in a car with someone you can’t stand. Good thing for me, our crew was radical. I’ve been friends with Annie for awhile now, she was actually the first rider that I worked with at Osiris and is a big reason why we created such a bad ass girls team over the past couple of years. Annie skates but is also a full time college student at Colorado University in Boulder and is majoring in Marketing and Advertising. There aren’t many people who can balance two things as different as a skateboarding career and college but Annie somehow manages it. And trust me, skateboarding and college are really different…well minus the beer. Annie started working at Sector 9 utilizing her marketing skills while she was home from school this summer so she came up with the idea for this trip. Genius. 2nd to the crew is pro surfer and two time ASP world champion longboarder Jen Smith. Jen just came off of her 2nd world champion title in Biarritz, France so this trip was also a mini victory tour…hollerrr! Jen and Annie grew up surfing and skating together in SD and are quite the dynamic duo…if you are hanging out with them you are basically having ALL the fun.

annie_jen_intro

The third part of our crew was photographer Bri Burkett. Bri is Annie’s friend from Boulder and she is a talented up and coming photographer. As for me, I sat back and enjoyed the ride, with my video camera attached to my hand of course. 6 days, 10 cities, 4 surfboards, 10 skateboards, 1 excursion = 1 “Seriously California” road trip. Bri took tons of photos and I have hours and hours of footage that I will be editing in the next month or so but for now I will recap the trip with a couple of photos from each day.

DAY 1: VENICE & MALIBU

We left San Diego on Sunday morning after loading up the car at Annie’s house and headed north. Our first destination was Venice beach where we skated the boardwalk and checked out the scene. There is a new skatepark being built right on the beach that is supposed to be finished later this year and from the looks of it, it’s going to be awesome. That was actually my first time ever to Venice beach and it was pretty much exactly like in the movies and on TV. Lots of people watching and lots of weirdos. Fun vibe though. After Venice we grabbed a quick lunch at Wahoo’s Fish Tacos and sat in some lovely LA traffic. We finally hit Malibu around afternoon and Jen and Annie got in for a sunset surf. We tested out my new gopro surf cam and it was a success (video footy coming soon)….After the malibu sesh, we headed up to Solvang where we met Bri at her house and crashed for the night. We were beat and Bri greeted us with a midnight pizza fresh out of the oven…YUM. Since Bri wasn’t with us this first day I just snapped a couple of photos on my point and shoot in between filming….
